Farms: The Original Stewards of Balance - Nurturing Environmental, Social, and Economic Resilience

Embracing Nature's Wisdom: Our Philosophy of Circular Economy

At Cavaleiro Farm, we are guided by the wisdom of nature, where there is no concept of waste, only cycles of renewal and regeneration. Our overarching philosophy revolves around creating circular economies in everything we do – from production to resource management and community engagement. Unlike conventional agriculture, which often relies heavily on external inputs and energy-intensive practices, we strive to minimize our dependence on such resources. Instead, we embrace organic waste inputs, utilize woodchips for mulching, and repurpose construction materials for building structures. By upcycling and repurposing, we not only minimize waste but also reduce our environmental footprint. Additionally, we foster reciprocal relationships within our community, where members support and collaborate with each other. Furthermore, our commitment to biodiversity extends to planting species that are beneficial for bees and other native wildlife, thereby nurturing a thriving ecosystem

Our animals and zero food waste

At Cavaleiro Farm, we are proud to operate with a zero food waste philosophy. For over 5 years, we have been partnering with local restaurants like Red Rooster and Maizal to divert their food waste from landfills. This collaboration has enabled us to repurpose organic materials and cardboard, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural model.

Weekly Diversion: Every week, we divert approximately 150 lbs of organic material and 40 lbs of cardboard from the landfill. Through our innovative approach, this waste is transformed into valuable resources for our farm.

Annual Impact: Over the course of a year, our efforts result in the diversion of approximately 9,880 lbs of organic material and cardboard from landfills. This equates to nearly 5 tons of waste diverted annually.

Five-Year Milestone: Since the inception of our food waste diversion program, we have diverted a remarkable total of 49,400 lbs of organic material and cardboard from landfills. This significant achievement underscores our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Potential Collective Impact: If every restaurant in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) embraced a similar approach to food waste diversion, the cumulative impact would be substantial. With an estimated 18,400 restaurants in the GTA, the potential annual diversion could reach approximately 90,896 tons of organic material and cardboard. This illustrates the transformative power of collective action in creating a more sustainable future.

At Cavaleiro Farm, we believe that every action, no matter how small, contributes to a larger movement towards sustainability. By repurposing food waste and embracing circular economy principles, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also nourishing our land and community for generations to come.

Join us in our mission to create a world where waste is minimized, resources are maximized, and every contribution makes a difference.
